This modern Lange 1 Moonphase* combines the balanced yet unusual dial layout of the Lange 1 series with the addition of a moonphase peering out from the seconds sub-dial. The watch is a lesser-seen example made from platinum with a complementary grey dial that blends smoothly into the case.
This watch comes to us with a curious provenance – it was originally a gift to the original owner from the Sultan Qaboos, who was invited to visit Oman with his wife after telling the Sultan a joke involving crystallised fruit that amused him greatly. On the last day of their stay, they received several presents, which included this watch. It only serves to reinforce the stories of generosity often expressed by the late Sultan Qaboos, and provides an explanation for why this watch is unaccompanied by paperwork, as is usually the case with watches that are royal gifts.
This A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Moonphase bears all the classic hallmarks of a typical Lange 1, except for the fact that the dial features a brilliant moonphase that is peeking out from underneath the seconds sub-dial. It is intriguing to note that rather than altering the entire layout of the piece, A. Lange & Söhne decided to maintain the archetypal Lange 1 layout, integrating, rather than singling out the moonphase. This is also a rare example of a moonphase complication produced by the brand.
Other customary indicators of the Lange 1 series are present, such as the traditional size and original dimensions. In keeping with the slightly updated look of the watch, the sub-dials are alternately recessed and raised, providing the dial with more depth and perspective. Additionally, the hands and index markers have lume details, further emphasising its modern origins.
Two attributes of this piece are particularly unusual – the platinum case and the light grey dial. Platinum is a rarely seen material within the A. Lange & Söhne collections, as their preferred white metal is typically white gold. The dial blends smoothly into the case, creating a more conventional look that complements the Lange 1’s atypical dial configuration. The aesthetics of the movement are just as impressive as the mechanics, with the chamfering and interior angles superbly hand finished.
